Gymnasts Spring into Sections

Hard Training Turns out Triumphantly

To quote Michael Jordan, “Some people want it to happen, some wish it to happen, others make it happen.” Which is exactly what the Irish gymnastics team did through hard work and dedication. The varsity team ended last week with a conference win against Little Falls and Rush City Friday, February 4. They will move on to compete at sections this Saturday, February 12, against various schools in Litchfield. Sophomore Kelsi Jude said that a team goal, “Is to make the top three at sections.”

For many it is their last year competing for the Irish gymnastics team, in regards to what she will miss the most about the gymnastics team, senior Brooke Mergen said, “The coaches and the bond that we [the team] all have.” Mergen said that the highlight of her season so far is, “Winning the conference.”

Even with all of the gymnasts’ hard work the unexpected can happen, sophomore Joanna Hall said that the most challenging apparatus for her this year is, “The vault because at the first meet I sprained my ankle on a tsuk. It was challenging because I couldn’t perform a tsuk until the last couple of meets, it was hard because it was my favorite.”

Although the team has put in many hours of practice, they also find time to laugh and have fun with one another. According to Jude the best part of being in gymnastics besides the sports aspect is, “All the people. Team bonding is fun, and we are always laughing.” The closeness the Irish gymnasts share has helped them in their season’s success.
